This time of year many of us amateur green thumbs are eagerly waiting to enjoy the fruits of our labor as lush fruits and vegetables burst forth from our back yard gardens in a true miracle of nature.

But have you ever wondered how the dry crusty seeds that we sow into the ground produce such colorful, great tasting and nutritious foods.

In oversimplified terms, after removing a measure of dirt, placing the seed into the ground and applying a healthy amount of water an enzyme is activated, respiration increases and plant cells are duplicated.

This causes the seed’s dry, crusty coat to burst open revealing the tip of the root which will anchor the plant in place until it produces its fruit.

As is true with much of God’s creation, this agricultural process is a physical example of what happens to a person spiritually when the Holy Spirit penetrates the dry crusty heart of the unbeliever to reveal the fruit of a redeemed life.

For Jesus said in John 12:24-25, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life
will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”

In this saying Jesus is making it clear that eternal life is not attained through much effort or a laundry list of good deeds but by total surrender of one’s will unto the God of all creation.

It is only when our dry crusty hearts are laid in the ground that God, through the power of the Cross because of His great love, will resurrect us from the dead so that we may experience His will for our lives.

For it is by God’s grace that He germinates the formerly unbelieving heart and causes His Spirit to blossom within us according to His Power and Truth.

Now the question is will you die
to your ambitions, wants and desires by faith so that the grace of God can produce in you the fruits of eternal life?

Dear reader, the Bible says that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Go ahead, lay your life down, call on the name of Christ and live forever.
