I was returning to San Diego from Orange County after several morning meetings when I began listening to an interview on KPBS Midday Edition featuring Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who also happens to be “freely” living in the U.S. illegally. Yes, the irony is thick.
Though I missed the beginning of the interview it quickly became patently obvious that I was listening to a left-wing biased bashing of conservatives, especially those of the “white” variety.
Specifically I take issue with the following statements made by Vargas:
I think this idea of an America that is changing, an America that is never going to be white. This is very scary for a lot of people. In the toxicity in which we talk about immigration we cannot really divorce from how we talk about race and how we talk about identity. It is fascinating sometimes to hear some of the candidates talk about immigration and you see the blurring of the lines between legal immigration and illegal immigration.
Mr. Vargas, the Pulitzer Prize must not be as discerning as it once was because you have made a rookie mistake sir. Let’s set the record straight. I am a white American conservative and simply put you don’t know me and you definitely don’t speak for me.
Moreover, just as your journey is not my journey it is equally true that my journey is not yours which is why you shouldn’t pretend to know why I think the way I do, say what I do and do what I do.
Yes, white conservatives, all conservatives really, are afraid for the future of our Country but not for the reasons you stated. We are afraid because we picture our posterity living in an America stripped of its glory, its virtue and most of all its Constitution. And this is something that we cannot, and will not bear in the least. And if need be we will rise up under the guarantee of the second amendment to ensure our future and our freedom.
We “white” Americans are not afraid of immigrants whether they be from Mexico, Syria or the Sudan. We may not know from which Country our ancestors emigrated but we know they did indeed emigrate. We know that this Country is great because of immigrants and that in order for the U.S. to continue to be a beacon of hope for future immigrants we must remain true to our conservative principals.
Our fears are not rooted in race, culture or ethnicity, our fears are rooted in the lack of reverence for our rich history, traditions and the rule of law. And yes, we do love the food imported by our immigrant brothers.
Jose Antonio Vargas Is Wrong
Finally, yes you can separate race from immigration and identity because race has nothing to do with why we want to build a wall. Building a wall isn’t to keep law abiding immigrants, who go about emigrating to this country the right way out. It’s about keeping ISIS, Al Queda, Hezbola and the drugs that are crippling our society from crossing our border.
I am personally in favor of reforming our immigration process to allow “more” legal law abiding, deserving immigrants to enter. I have met many illegal immigrants who are wonderful people.
NO ONE IS SAYING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE LESS THAN HUMAN AND DON’T DESERVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A LIFE IN AMERICA. WE ARE SAYING THEY SHOULD MAKE THAT LIFE WITHOUT COMMITTING A FELONY AS THEIR FIRST ACT ON OUR SOIL.
Mr. Vargas, unfortunately you’re not part of positive change, you’re part of what’s dividing this country. In fact you being allowed to break the law every day you wake up in our Country is an indictment against our Federal Government; which, has trampled the rule of law to pursue their own ends. This is shameful and will come to an end soon.
City On A Hill
Mr. Vargas, we white conservatives love people of every color, race and ethnicity. We are the most welcoming, peaceful and caring people on the planet. We’re the city that is set on a hill. How do I know? Because we’re Americans.
We’re the Country that gives more aid than any other country in the world. We’re the Country that others come running to when they have a crisis. We’re the country that exports the Gospel of Peace. We are the only reason this world hasn’t gone to hell in a hand basket, and when I say “we” I don’t mean our government, I mean “We The People.”
The very white conservatives you demean with your visceral rhetoric are the same one’s who would give you the shirt off their back and the one’s you can thank for experiencing freedom.
Never again speak on behalf of white conservatives for it’s obvious you don’t know us and don’t care to to know us.
Do The Right Thing
Mr. Vargas, do you truly want to be an American? If your answer is yes, then do what Americans have been doing for hundreds of years – the right thing. Move back to your country of origin and apply to enter the United States legally and wait…as long as it takes. You might even find that your own country needs you more than we do.
